So is this trend that is rapidly becoming more common rather than the exception selfish or is it genius? The re-known wedding planner who has offices in London, Paris, Marrakech and Moscow explained that this is becoming fast a worldwide trend though it is not as widespread in more traditional settings such as Marrakech. However with the downturn of the economy that has never really recovered, people have taken a more austere looking at the spending in weddings. This is a trend that has been picked up by young couples and even middle aged grooms and brides who would like to get married but just do not have the finances to fund a wedding.

Another group of people feel that they would rather spend the money doing something more worthwhile such as buying a house. While yet another group of couples would prefer to spend their wedding costs on themselves and perhaps immediate family members so that they enjoy a luxurious wedding that they otherwise would not be able to enjoy if they invited family and friends. Wedding planners have become wise to this kinds of weddings and have out together various packages that appeal to couples that prefer to elope. Elopements are also ideal for couples that do not want to go through the disagreements or stress of planning a wedding which can cause damage to some relationships especially where there are constant disagreements.

La Jet Fete, a wedding destination company planner Ms. Dunkwu explained that they have come up with packages that appeal to couples and very small groups of people. “ In the past, destination weddings would have a party of even up to fifty people. However, with the increase of elopements, it is common to find a wedding party with only the couple or the couple and immediate family members.

She adds that the most common types of elopements weddings are destination weddings as they also double up as the honeymoon for the married couple. There are simple wedding ceremonies which may involve going to the court house and getting married. More detailed elopement wedding ceremonies may be by the beach, in a picturesque lodge or any other place that appeals to the couple. The most common expenses for couples who want to elope are a photographer, a video guy and accommodation. There are packages that also include cake, dinner and flowers.

Kyle and Jamie are a young couple in their mid and late twenties who eloped. They come from culturally different backgrounds and their families could not agree on the kind of wedding they wanted. The couple decided to elope for the sake of peace.

On the other hand, Catherine and Paul who are 45 years old and 51 years old respectively decided to elope as this was not the first marriage for either of them. “We had a destination wedding in Paris with only our children and their families.” said Catherine. “It served as a break as well as a wedding and honeymoon for us and our families. “ she added. Paul weighed in and said that they were both divorced and to avoid leaving out some family members they opted to elope and treat themselves to an exotic holiday.
