Other investors are interested in investor sentiment about where the market is headed, as it can give a clue as to whether investors will be buying or selling stocks. It also gives an indirect hint as to how investors see the future economy overall.
1,233 respondents were asked if they think the stock market will finish higher or lower or finish flat by the end of 2014. They were also asked by how much the the market would go down or up if it doesn't finish flat. 26% of the respondents said that prices will increase, 47% said that they will go down and 27% said that prices will remain the same. For those think that the market will end higher, 57% said that it will increase by 1-5%, 28% believe it will rise by 11-15% and 15% said that the market will increase by 15-20%. On the other hand, for those believe that the market will finish lower, 77% said that it will finish down by 1-5%, 19% thought that it will decline by 5-10%, 4% believe that the market will plunge by more than 10%.
This poll is a great tool for other investors as it can provide insight as to how investors might behave looking out towards the end of the year. If they think prices will go up, they might be encouraged to buy between now and then.
