A Torrance Optometrist Discusses Learning and Development Issues Caused by Vision Problems

Some children have difficulty learning to read in primary school. Michael Hansen, a Torrance optometrist, believes that in some cases this could be due to vision problems rather than learning disabilities.

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. - Jan. 23, 2014 - PRLog -- LOS ANGELES, CA – January, 22, 2014 – Michael Hansen states, “Recent studies show that as many as a quarter of first-graders have eyes that are not properly aligned or have difficultly syncing their eyes to move across or down a page of text. Despite the large number of school children with such visual problems, not enough medical professionals are aware of this existing problem.”  Hansen is a Torrance optometrist who knows first hand how many children struggle with vision problems.  What’s surprising is how many children’s vision problems go undetected.  Michael Hansen says, “The reason for many primary school children’s inability to read may be a mystery. However, Katie Johnson, author of Red Flags for Primary Teachers, believes that it is the teachers’ job to unlock the mystery and help his or her students.”

Teachers are often faced with this challenge.  In fact, “A person who is helping to solve this “puzzle” is Dr. Bob McLaughlin, former principal and Superintendent of Washington's Union Gap School District.  His school district experimented with teaching visually challenged children how to read by using books with red-colored overlays to make the text more readable.  His experiments were successful and many of his students were reading well for the first time,” says Hansen.

Advanced Eyecare Center has many Torrance optometrists (http://advancedeyecarecenter.net/south-bay-area/torrance/...) who take this issue seriously and want to contribute to awareness.  Hansen says, “Good vision is important to everyone’s success in life because 80% of everything humans do and know involves a sense of sight. People who have difficulty reading will already be at a disadvantage.”  He continues by saying, “Advanced Eyecare Center recognizes the magnitude of this issue.  As many as 1 in 4 primary school children may have difficulty reading because their eyes cannot align properly.”
