Follow on Google News |  Walking the Nile hits the 1,000km markBy: Secret Compass Pioneering explorer Levison Wood is six weeks into his epic attempt to walk the 6,650km length of the river Nile – and has just completed his first 1,000 kilometers. If his ambitious attempt is successful, Wood will become the first person ever recorded to walk the world’s longest river, from its source in Rwanda to its mouth on Egypt’s shores. Secret Compass, the expedition and adventure company co-founded by Wood in 2010, is running two fundraising expeditions in 2014 for people to join this historic trek. Tom Bodkin, Wood’s colleague from the UK Army’s Parachute Regiment and co-founder of Secret Compass, said, “Our fundraising expeditions to Uganda and Sudan will help people join an extraordinary project while fundraising for four incredible charities, namely Tusk Trust, Spaces for Giants, ABF the Soldiers’ Charity, and Malawi-based medical charity The AMECA Trust. “This March 3, we aim to send eight people out to join Lev at Lake Albert in rural northern Uganda. Highlights of their ten-day fundraising trek include exploring remote bushlands; seeing hippo, crocodiles and game; and experiencing rural Ugandan tribal culture.” Kerry O’Neill, Secret Compass’s marketing director, said, “Lev’s efforts are being followed by thousands on the Walking the Nile website and on his social media channels. This is fantastic news for the four charities supported by Walking the Nile.” Ruth Markus, CEO of AMECA, said, “The AMECA Trust is delighted that Lev’s hit his first 1,000km. We’re both grateful and excited to be supported by Walking the Nile and are currently busy seeking team members keen to join Secret Compass’s two expeditions to fundraise for our organisation.” Wood added, “AMECA is very close to my heart as it was started in memory of my best friend from university. It’s fantastic to be able to continue to raise awareness and funds for AMECA through Walking the Nile and through Secret Compass’s two fundraising expeditions to Uganda and Sudan in 2014.” Also supported by Walking the Nile, the Tusk Trust is a small, dynamic organisation with over twenty years’ experience funding conservation, community development and environmental education programmes across Africa.
