Colombo Dockyard Shines As One Of The Leading Regional Player For DSV/ MSV Repairs

Colombo Dockyard ventures into high end markets with successful entry into repairs of Diving Support Vessels. Colombo has been busy with offshore repair projects from Norway and India.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - Jan. 22, 2014 - PRLog -- Colombo has been a strategic repair hub for a wide spectrum of vessels, from Tankers to Dredgers to Offshore Support Vessels, Mobile Offshore Drill units to Diving Support Vessels. The Colombo Dockyard PLC established in 1974 has grown to be an international player providing world class repair services / shipbuilding to wide client base over the past 3 decades. The shipyard celebrated 20 years of successful operation in joint collaboration with Onomichi Dockyard Co. Ltd. Japan in March 2013.

The proven track record of Colombo Dockyard as reputed ship repair facility paved the way for securing of the specialised project of major lay-up and drydocking and repair of Diving Support vessel Samudra Sevak. The diving support vessels are specialised vessels utilised in the offshore oil exploration sites in the global arena. These vessels are fitted with highly sophisticated dynamic positioning systems; saturation diving system equipped with a diving bell and related operating systems.

The DSV. Samudra Sevak lay-up repairs were successfully completed meeting the owners, managers, class and diving team requirements. The vessel’s underwater work scope was carried out when she was accommodated in drydock No. 01 directly on arrival. She was re docked in Dock No. 04 (125,000 DWT) for final stage of her repairs / testing.

Colombo Dockyard has mobilised an experienced repair team on the project for smooth re-delivery of the vessel meeting the client’s and classification’s requirements, in this significant breakthrough project. The project is headed by Mr. Priyanka Cooray – Ship Manager.

The company have achieved these significant milestones in a short span of time under the visionary leadership of Mr. A. Nakauchi –Chairman and Mr. Mangala Yapa – Managing Director / CEO.  The commercial department has worked tirelessly headed by Mr. Kithsiri Nayakaratne – General Manager (Commercial) to secure / manage these complex projects successfully.

During this call extensive scope of repairs was carried out, the key area attended is indicated below:

One of the key areas handled is the repairs attended on the Diving scope: Diving bell: Machining of sealing faces of entry, renewal of penetrators 23 Nos, blasting and painting, hydro static pressure testing to 32 bar and Insulation work. Bell trunking and clamps - Renewal of pin bushes and pins. Bell Handling system - Replacement of Hydraulic manifolds, overhauling of guide wire winches. Umbilical winch - Renewal of hub and replacement of bearings. Main bell winch - Overhauling of breaks and load test to 32 ton.

On the deck section the scope included: 120 ton crane jib removal, inspection of all parts, major steel work and load test. Ballast Valve system overhauling.  02 Nos. HIPAP units installation.

Major miscellaneous deck work: Blasting painting of hull and all tanks, all decks, accommodation bulk heads.  Extensive steel renewal was carried out totalling to more than 36ton of steel renewal mainly in tanks, hull, and accommodation.

The repairs attended on the Engine Scope: Overhauling of 05 Nos. Main engines, Propeller shaft withdrawal, for class inspection, Azimuth thruster overhauling, Installation of new service air compressor. Around 120 Nos electrical motors overhauling including high voltage motors and alternators.

The project team lead by Ship Manager Mr. Priyanka Cooray was ably supported by production department teams consisting of Mr. Heshan De Silva / Mr. Asanka Herath on the Deck / Diving related scope, Mr A. H. Mohmad and Mr. K. Kalubowila surface preparation and coating, Mr. Thivanka Seneviratne giving full support on the steel renewal area. Mr. Kumara and Asiri Wijegunathilalka looking after the engine department scope and Mr. Chandralal taking care of the electrical side.

The co-ordination of the service engineers / OEM specialists was smoothly coordinated by the commercial department Mr. A. Sarathchandra – Estimating & Invoicing Engineer.

The owner’s interests were looked after in Colombo by owner’s representative Mr. S. K Biswas – Marine Base Manager – ONGC and Mr. N. N. Ojha – General Manager –SCI.  Mr. Mario D'Lima was the Diving Base Manager was the specialist overlooking the diving related repairs / equipments from owner’s side.

The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. Mumbai, are the managers to the project, while the owners are Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. India. The husbanding work on this project is handled by Asha Agencies Ltd.
