Statewide Sustainability Conference Taps Next Generation of Environmental Leaders

Washington Higher Education Sustainability Conference to Host Corresponding Student Summit on Feb. 6
 
BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Jan. 21, 2014 - PRLog -- The Washington Higher Education Sustainability Conference (WAHESC) is pleased to announce it will host a Student Summit alongside its first annual gathering of the Washington State higher education community for dialogue on regional sustainability topics and solutions. The Student Summit will take place during WAHESC on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Western Washington University in Bellingham.

PURPOSE // During the Summit, students will participate in breakout group discussions and expert facilitator lead workshops. Topic areas include: Divestment from fossil fuels, feminism and sustainability, campus dining, permaculture, campus-community involvement, social sustainability, conscious consumption and more. This event will assist in forming regional connections to further benefit campus sustainability movements taking place statewide, while expanding on relationships that exist between social, economic and environmental systems.

STUDENT KEYNOTES

Jacob de Guzman, Western Washington University


Fostering sustainable practices is one of Jacob de Guzman’s greatest passions.  Working for the WWU Office of Sustainability, North Cascades National Park and serving as president of the Huxley student chapter of the Air and Waste MGMT Association has allowed Jacob to gain a small wealth of sustainability experience.  He is currently a senior at Western Washington University studying to become a Huxley environmental science major with a double minor in Spanish and environmental education.

Sunni Wissmer, University of Washington

Sunni Wissmer is happiest when pursing her passions for Art, Architecture, and the Natural World. She is a member of the University of Washington’s College of Built Environments, where she is studying Biomimicry and Sustainable Design within her undergraduate major, Community, Environment, and Planning. Sunni also has served on the University of Washington Campus Sustainability Fund committee and the Environmental Stewardship Committee, helping catalyze sustainable change within the UW at all levels. She received the Husky Green Award for her work in connecting students and Facilities staff on sustainability projects last year.
