Holistic doctor, Michael E Rosenbaum, MD, explains healthcare is changing in organic ways thanks to the work of holistic doctors. Find out how they are expanding definitions of health and healing.

TORRANCE, Calif. - Jan. 21, 2014 - PRLog -- What professional do most people turn to when they have questions about their health? Most people would answer, “My doctor, of course.”

But that answer is no longer as clear cut as it used to be. Because more and more people are looking for a holistic approach to health and healing.

“Here’s the little-known truth about medicine,” says Dr. Michael E Rosenbaum, MD. “While conventional doctors can talk to you about drugs and surgery, few are equipped to talk about health and wellness. That’s why more people are adding holistic doctors to their health care team. We have earned our MD’s by going through conventional medical schools. And while sometimes we may recommend drugs or surgery - because of its limited effectiveness in treating the root causes of illness - conventional medicine is rarely our first recommendation.”

Holistic medicine is, simply put, medicine that treats the whole person. Holistic medical doctors take all the facets of health into account when developing a path towards wellness.

Instead of focusing solely on drug or surgical interventions, holistic doctors bring nutrition, lifestyle changes and emotional health into the picture as well. Sometimes they draw from other medical systems like Indian Ayurvedic Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, naturopathic, chiropractic and homeopathic medicine.

“Currently, we’re seeing a dramatic – and organic - shift in how medicine is practiced,” acknowledges Dr. Rosenbaum. “Many doctors like me have realized the limits to conventional health care and have taken the initiative to expand their expertise. Likewise, millions of people have taken control of their health and now seek out holistic doctors, opting for care that focuses on wellness.”

Some medical schools – like University of Arizona’s School of Integrative Medicine – are expanding their medical courses to meet this new understanding of health. And some health insurance companies have covered some holistic therapies like acupuncture.

However, conventional medicine, in many respects, also seems to be going in the other direction.

In 2004 a group of researchers from the North Carolina University School of Nutrition surveyed 104 medical schools to see how much they covered the topic of nutrition. In 2004, they found that only 38% of the schools taught the 25 hours recommended by the National Academy of Sciences.

Given how important nutrition is for health, 25 hours is paltry compared to what doctors really need to serve their patients well.

Unfortunately, the results of this study did not improve with time. In 2010, these same researchers surveyed 105 medical schools. And this time they found the number of schools meeting this recommendation had dropped – to only 28%.

“The findings of this study are unfortunate,” notes Dr. Rosenbaum, “Since research has shown how nutritional approaches to healing can be just as effective as medicine – if not more effective in many cases. For example, studies have shown a handful of nuts a day does far more good for your heart than statins. And fish oil can do more for depression than many antidepressants. Not only are these interventions safer and more effective . . . At a time when everyone is concerned about health care costs, they’re more affordable as well.”

As many holistic doctors will attest, thanks to the global information age and the tremendous amount of research on non-conventional healing, health professionals have access to more healing knowledge than ever before.

There really is no excuse for doctors to ignore the resources at their disposal to help patients enjoy good health. And - as the number of people using holistic doctors demonstrates - patients don’t buy that excuse either.

Holistic doctors have responded to this shift in thinking by straddling the worlds of conventional medicine and natural healing, allowing patients to make use of both areas of health in a complementary fashion.
