Italian moms are stylish because they have somewhere to go

Canadian expat discovers the many reasons new moms have to dress in Italy, even if they stay at home.

MILANO, Italy - Jan. 20, 2014 - PRLog -- Reasons to Dress.com is the personal blog of Angie, a new mom and Canadian expat living in Modena, Italy.   The blog features weekly Real Mom Street Style photos and highlights the differences between the North American and Italian social lives of new parents.

What’s different about my blog, is that I not only show you what I wore, but where I went.

I was pleasantly surprised that my social life didn’t completely die when I became a mom, and I think it has everything to do with how Italians live.

Italians, have many social traditions and they dress for every occasion, even grocery shopping. And they always bring their children everywhere, even for an evening drink out with friends.
- Angie

Married to an Italian leather artisan, after the birth of their son, Angie accepted a work at home position to raise their bilingual toddler.

“I thought that working from home meant I would no longer be seen, no longer have any reasons to dress, and that I’d be doomed to a life of changing diapers in yoga pants and stained sweatshirts.  I was used to dressing for fashion tradeshows, and spending the year travelling between Paris, Milan, Florence and New York

She turned to the internet for style inspiration, only to find momstyle bloggers wearing designer heels and bags while taking photographs on their front lawns.

“I didn’t need OUTFIT inspiration, I had a whole closet filled with nice clothes.  I needed inspiration on where to go!

I started questioning where are all those mom bloggers going in their luxury heels?

At that point she started to notice how Italian moms were dressed.  In the medium sized city of Modena, there is a lot of effort placed on appearance and the Italian concept of “bella presenza”, having a nice presence.

Modena is the second largest city in the Emilia Romagna region, Pavarotti’s hometown and home to the Ferrari and the Osteria Francescana, the third best restaurant in the World run by chef Massimo Bottura.

“People are no more affluent than your average North American, especially considering that Italy has notoriously low wages, however, they are always put together.

It is never acceptable to wear yoga pants out of the house because at every occasion you may run into friends or acquaintances. The concept of ‘Date Night’ doesn’t exist here either.  There’s no need to escape your kids, you just bring them with you to the restaurant, bar or cafe!

One of the main features of ReasonsToDress.com is a weekly Real Mom Street Style article, featuring real moms seen on the streets of Modena.

“No one is doing this! Moms are consistently left out of street style photos.  I am the only blogger that I know of doing this in Italy, and I’m sure one of the only people focusing on mom street style in the blogosphere.  Most of the mom street style focus is placed on celebrities, but they ALWAYS have somewhere glamorous to go!

I wanted to focus on real moms and what they are actually wearing and find out where they are going.

I’ve met some incredibly stylish moms while gathering these photos, and I can see that they appreciate the compliment of being photographed.  These are not bloggers, so they don’t get dolled up because they know someone will be taking their photograph, they dress for themselves and are pleasantly surprised that someone’s noticed their effort.

Real Mom Street Style photographs are published every Tuesday and often include what the women wore and where they were going.

“I want to inspire new moms to up their style.  I feel so lucky that I can get dolled up for any reason at all.  I think that in North America we’re often bombarded with the question ‘Where are you going all dolled up?’, when really, we should never have to justify looking our best.

http://reasonstodress.com has daily features including; real mom street style and outfit inspiration, Italy event profiles, an insider’s look at the fashion industry and also features and article called “Fashion Foresight™”, how to shop the sales for trendy items months in advance.

Reasons to Dress.com invites all moms into the euro mommy life of a North American expat in search of style inspiration.  Angie leads us through the cobblestone streets of Italy while pushing a stroller in heels.
