Shanghai Kate, an avid educator, regularly lectures on the importance of women in the tattoo industry through her “From Voodoo To Vogue” slide presentation in which she gives a fascinating historical overview of how the modern tattoo industry evolved globally from prehistoric Ice Age to the current  embracement of modern tattooing. She has presented in Art Museums (Albright Knox Museum in Buffalo, NY); Universities (Columbia University, NYC and Tompkins College in Ithaca, NY); as well as many conventions around the world.  She is the ONLY woman featured in the highly acclaimed full-length documentary film, TATTOO NATION, released in 2013 and now available on DVD.

Kate is solely responsible for the newest (and possibly last) tattoo collectible: the acetate tattoo stencil. Once relegated to the garbage heap, Kate saw value in these hand-carved pieces of art and history by the masters of the craft and has published several global best selling books about Sailor Jerry Collin’s tattoo acetates. Kate will have her books, DVDs, artwork, and original Sailor Jerry stencils available for sale as wherever she goes.

Americans spend more than a billion of dollars* each year on tattoo ink and the woman who helped propel the once underground world of body art to a cultural norm has no plan on slowing down. This author, tattoo artist, lecturer, global traveler and cultural icon owns and operates Shanghai Kate’s Tattoo Shop in Austin, Texas and will be traveling to Germany in the spring of 2014 to set up shop for part of the year. Kate has worked in or managed tattoo shops in New York City; Honolulu, Hawaii; Salt Lake City, Utah; Buffalo, New York; Philadelphia, PA; and even Kodiak, Alaska. She has tattooed indigenous people in the rain forests of Panama, the Philippines, and Mexico City.

Celebrity clients include Howard Stern and his wife, Beth; Casey Affleck, members of  Pearl Jam, photographer David LaChapelle as well as many other actors, models, musicians; sports figures and other tattoo artists who continue to seek out Kate for her strong vivid tattoos in nearly every style: American classic, Polynesian, Tribal, Asian, Photo-realism, Fineline.

Tattoo enthusiasts wait for years to get more Shanghai Kate tattoos. New clients are encouraged to make an appointment for their own Shanghai Kate tattoo.
