History of Schaefferstown, Heidelberg Township and Lebanon County Highlighted

Two local authors team up to share the history of the Pennsylvania area

Jan. 20, 2014 - PRLog -- Releasing on February 10, 2014 is Schaefferstown and Heidelberg Township, Lebanon County, the newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series. This pictorial history celebrates this rural and charming Pennsylvania area in more than 200 vintage images.

Stunning, historic images, culled from the archives of Historic Schaefferstown, Inc. and local residents, display the unique history of Schaefferstown and surrounding Heidelberg Township in Lebanon County.   The book chronicles the founding of Schaefferstown by German immigrant Alexander Schaeffer in 1758. Images and information are also included on how Schaeffer laid out the village with a central square and built a water system using underground wooden pipes to connect a spring-fed reservoir to two troughs on Market Street and the town square, thus creating one of the oldest public waterworks in the United States. The book then continues to show the progression of the city and the reasons behind its small-town look that characterizes it today.

Schaefferstown and Heidelberg Township, Lebanon County showcases some of the log, stone and even a few half-timbered houses, as well as the original town layout. Today, Schaefferstown has still retained its

Germanic roots, small-town feel and hospitality.  The pages in this book will give readers a glimpse back in time, a view of the rich history of the area. Author Diane Wenger and Jan Taylor hope that the “book will inspire residents and former residents to cherish their heritage” and stress “the importance of preserving and clearly labeling photographs for future generations.”

*All author profits from the sale of the book will go to the Historic Schaefferstown, Inc., a non-profit educational organization.*
