For many years now, the Ford F-150 has been the top selling vehicle in the United States among all car types. A total of 33 million Ford pickups have been sold, with currently 11 million models still on the road. For their 2015 model, Ford has taken a major risk by using aluminum, not steel, for the body of the truck.

The body of the pickup uses military-grade aluminum, the kind found on airplanes and fighter jets. High-strength steel is still used in the vehicle for the pickup’s frame. By using more aluminum, Ford was able to drop 700 pounds from the vehicle. The result is a 20% increase in fuel economy and easier hauling and towing. This pickup is both efficient and highly durable.

In addition to the new body, Ford also plans to introduce two new engines to the lineup; the 5.0L V8 and 3.5L EcoBoost V6 will return with likely higher outputs. The starting engine will be a new 3.5L V6 replacing the old 3.7L V6 also found in the Ford Mustang. It will be flex-fuel compatible and more efficient. Exact output figures have not yet been released.

The other new addition to the engine lineup is a 2.7L EcoBoost V6 engine. This will feature an automatic stop-start system allowing the vehicle to shut down cylinders and start it back up in less than a second. The EcoBoost is made from lighter materials and utilizes a compact, space-saving design allowing it to be more efficient.
