Follow on Google News | Turnabouts. The hidden side of collectionsFlorence, Italy - from December 17, 2013 to February 2, 2014
By: Florence Events The invisible side of a masterpiece. This is the theme of the Christmas exhibition called “The Never Seen”, which will present forty Turnabouts or forty hidden sides of the works. Paintings, antique marbles, majolicas, a cabinet and an altar will be displayed, presenting the front and back of all the works, which tell the story of the works themselves, their authors’ work and the changes of ownership. Most of the works come from the Uffizi’s collections, in addition to others on loan from the Palatine Gallery, the Bargello Museum, the Gallery of Modern Art in Palazzo Pitti, the Medici Villa of Petraia and Opificio delle Pietre Dure. The exhibition will include many examples: in the Triptych by Froment depicting scenes from Christ’s life, the closed doors present the commissioners of the work of art, together with the Madonna and Child. A precious trunk used by the Medici Court contained a travel altar. The paintings sometimes hide lyrics written on the back, or there are double self-portraits, such as the work by the Brazilian Camara that seems to sink into the table and reappear on the back.
