Jan. 20, 2014 - PRLog -- With a presidential proclamation and National Mentorship Month in its inaugural year, there was no better time for New York’s Young & Powerful Group to launch their newest initiative, the Pipeline Mentoring Project.

The Pipeline Mentoring Project in partnership with other mentoring organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC (http://www.bigsnyc.org/) will combat the school-to-prison pipeline phenomenon by providing students with inspiration to overcome obstacles. Currently seeking donations, the program will connect New York City youth age’s 7-18 with both young professionals and current college students to broaden their perspectives on potential career options. With a number of mentor sites secured across the city, mentors will begin meeting with youth from schools and community programs.

In honor of PMP’s launch, the Young & Powerful group will be hosting “Breaking the Cycle, Education not Incarceration,” live on Google Hangouts on Monday, January 27th at 8pm. The discussion featuring a series of panelists, will address the importance of mentorship and how mentorship can throw a wrench in the school-to-prison pipeline dilemma.Research has proven that mentors can play a pivotal role in the lives of youth. Mentorship provides youth with the tools to avoid risky behavior and make positive decisions. In the age of fatherless children and single-family households, mentors can also help bridge the gap between youth and adults. Mentors not only have a positive impact on their mentees, but on parents and the community as well.
