Hunt Clubs Should Strive to Increase Safety Training for Members

Statistics show that the number of hunters who went afield in 2010 was estimated to be 16.3 million. Of that total, approximately 8,122 sustained injuries, or 50 per 100,000 participants, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

Jan. 19, 2014 - PRLog -- While hunting is a relatively safe outdoor sport, accidents still can -and do- happen. For hunting clubs, safety should be a top priority. Experts recommend that hunt clubs encourage members to take safety precautions, to help reduce the chance of accidents.

Outlining the common causes of hunting-related injuries can help to prevent accidents. According to statistics, tree stands account for a majority of hunting related accidents. Mishandled guns and ATV accidents account for other common hunting-related injuries.

“Tree stands are involved in one in three accidents -making tree stand safety education important for every hunt club,” says Frank Hursh, owner of Texas Outdoor Insurance. Hursh says that education is an important part of accident prevention.

Loaded and mishandled guns account for needless accidents that could have easily been prevented. Experts recommend that hunt clubs require their members to take gun safety courses, to ensure that all members understand basic gun safety. “Simple safety procedures can save lives,” says Hursh. “By knowing how to handle a gun safely, you protect yourself and other hunters too.”

While safety precautions are an important part of accident reduction, accidents can still happen -even to the most safety conscious hunting club members. Because of this, hunt clubs should make sure that they have adequate liability insurance.

Aside from the obvious benefits that safety precautions provide, it’s important to note that the fewer accidents a hunt club has, the lower the insurance rates will be. Hunt club safety is a win-win situation for all parties involved, no matter how you look at it.

“By keeping safety a top priority, your hunting club can help to reduce the chance of accidents,” Hursh reminds hunters and hunt clubs. “The fewer accidents you or your club are involved in – the better it is for everyone.”
