Companies Should Strive to Reduce Accidents in the Workplace

While accidents cannot always be prevented, employers play a major role in the workplace safety.

Jan. 18, 2014 - PRLog -- According to Texas Energy Insurance, employers can have a direct impact on the amount of workplace injuries that a company sees.

“One of the best ways to reduce accidents in the workplace is by taking steps towards accident prevention,” says Frank Hursh, owner of Texas Energy Insurance.

On his website, Hursh outlines several ways that employers can help to create a safe work environment for their employees; reducing the chance of workplace accidents.

“Slips, trips, and falls are among the most common causes of accidents in the workplace,” says Hursh. “Other dangers come from falling objects, burns, fires, dangerous substances, and even stress. Safety in the workplace doesn’t happen by accident! Employers should take specific steps to help create a safe work environment for their employees.”

Employers should create safety policies and procedures, and include practical steps for accident prevention. Employers should also communicate their expectations for safety. “Post safety information, and ask employees for their input on improving workplace safety,” says Hursh. It’s also important for employers to act on information that is given to them by their employees and take steps to correct safety hazards.

“Don’t just talk about safety –act on it!” says Hursh.

Other advice includes establishing a safety management system that includes risk assessment protocols. And of course, companies should always provide employees with the right tools and safety equipment necessary for the job –this includes safety training for employees.

Additionally, any incidents should be written up after each accident –no matter how small.

Those accidents should be investigated to find out how the accident could have been prevented. It’s estimated that up to 75% of accidents are preceded by a near miss. Employers should take the time to analyze accidents, and find out how they could have been prevented.

Finally, Hursh recommends worker’s compensation coverage for employees.

“It is estimated that about 33% of the Texas workforce does not have workers’ compensation coverage,” says Hursh. “The implications and risks for employers without workers’ compensation include being sued by an employee who is injured at work, and having to pay out of pocket for medical expenses and lost wages to the injured employee.”
