God Must Don’t Like Me at the YMCA Boll Family Theater on February 21– February 23. During Black History Month 2014, theater patrons will have an opportunity to enjoy the annual performance of Why Am I Black? God Must Don’t Like Me. Why Am I Black boldly addresses a longtime issue within the African-American culture: colorism. For years African-Americans have joked about whether “light skin” or “dark skin” was in, but for some – it’s no joking matter. Meet Lisa, a young, gifted, and black woman with just one defeating characteristic – the color of her skin. We invite you to journey with Lisa as she seeks to find the answer to Why Am I Black? The topic of colorism has been explored by Oprah Winfrey and Iyanla Vanzant, Solidad O’Brien (Who Is Black in America, 12/2012) and was the central focus of the 2012 documentary “Dark Girls.” WAIB is appropriate for all ages and designed to spark serious conversation about the way African-Americans are viewed by the world and internally in 2014. Performances will take place at YMCA Boll Family Theater (1401 Broadway, Detroit 48226) End
