“Rake” follows Keegan Deane, a criminal defense lawyer whose personal problems have led him to self-destructive behavior that has him battling wits with everyone around him, including his ex-wife, the judges, the assistant district attorney, his bookie, and even the IRS. (#_ftn1) “Rake” stars Greg Kinnear and is directed by Sam Raimi.
The role was a natural fit for Sarah-Jane, a former Unit Manager for a National News Service. She adds, “I was in my element. The world of producing live news broadcasts is so incredibly competitive, fast-paced and adrenalin-fueled, just like a reporter fighting for their story.”
Director Sam Raimi did not miss her trademark confident assertiveness. “I admit it, I was a little shy and gushy at first. I mean, he created one of the best horror franchises of all time, ('Evil Dead') not to mention 'Spider-Man’ and ‘Oz The Great and Powerful’, but he has a sense of humor that’s almost as cheeky as mine. After a take or two we were bantering”. Sarah-Jane said the highlight of the shoot was when he asked her to come up with an extra line for a scene to which she then jokingly demanded a writing credit.
Shot on location in Downtown Los Angeles, Sarah-Jane loved working in a real environment, she notes: “It’s a gift. Acting in a theater or on sound-stage never quiet matches the buzz.”
The series is predicted to be a huge hit for Fox and a potential award-winning performance for Academy Award Nominee Greg Kinnear. Sarah-Jane was not surprised by his kindness and focus on set: “You don’t have the career he [Kinnear] has without being talented and generous. He was genuinely interested in my life. We chatted about my recent U.S. Citizenship, he wanted to know all about the ceremony!” she says.
Up next, the Australian/British Sarah-Jane is putting the finishing touches on her lead role as a gun-toting bad-girl in feature film, ‘Loyalty’, due to be released later this year. She’s also starring in the much-anticipated web-series 'Shine On', which is set to release in Summer, as well as the first annual Los Angeles Sci-fi Theater Festival scheduled in May.
