Troubling Statistics Show That Texas Leads the States in Drunk Driving Related Deaths

Alarming statistics show that Texas leads the nation in drunk driving-related deaths. According to recent statistics, drunk driving was responsible for 2,571 collisions in 2011, resulting in 3,015 fatalities.

PRLog - Jan. 14, 2014 - These tragic statistics show the devastating effects that drunk driving has. Over 3,000 deaths in 2011 could have been prevented by drivers simply not getting behind the wheel.

The financial implications of drunk driving are also staggering. In Texas, taxpayer subsidy of drunk driving fatalities accounted for $6 billion in 2011.

In Texas, the minimum penalty for a Texas DUI or DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) is a jail confinement for 72 hours, and fines that can reach up to $500.

If you are caught driving while intoxicated with an open container, you will spend a minimum of 6 days in jail. Minors who break this law are required pay a $500 fine, take an alcohol awareness course, perform community service, and have their driver's license suspended.

“Every time you choose not to get behind the wheel after drinking, you've saved at least one life (your own), and countless others of drivers you would have encountered on the roads,” says I Drive Safely.org, “There are always alternatives to drinking and driving - a hotel room, a friend's house, and a designated driver are all great options that will ensure everyone's safety.”

While the monumental impact that drunk driving has on the state shows the increasingly important need for tougher legislation and increased education on the impact of drunk driving, Texas legislators appear to be taking steps towards combating the prevalence of drunk driving in Texas. Legislation now requires insurance companies to provide customers with a 5% discount for voluntarily taking a Texas Education Agency (TEA)-approved drug and alcohol awareness course. This incentive is hoped to have an impact on the number of drunk driving related incidents.
