BOHEMIA, N.Y. - Jan. 14, 2014 - PRLog -- To determine if these two words, marketing and motivation are related, they were entered into a Google search. Google locked up. Once the computer was re-booted, the same phrase was re-entered. Result? You guessed it, the same thing happened once again. Was Google or a higher power such as Microsoft trying to tell us something?

The computer was given a time-out and was later tried but this time on a Yahoo search. By golly there were hundreds of pages in a second or less!

The results were a large number of marketing companies are using marketing and motivation in their names. There were a lot of inspirational quotes and a few blogs that were neither inspirational nor interesting. Quite frankly, most were boring and we don’t mean just the quotes.

It’s unusual to get such lackluster search results. In direct marketing and mail we are always trying to motivate our customers to buy or donate. The capabilities of digital printing motivate us to use more personalization and better data. But what about direct marketing?

A higher response rate is a good motivation

For instance, how many channels to we have to use with direct mail? Depending on your particular industry, there are quite a few channels to select from. Since many of your customers use a variety of channels or even have a channel preference, it’s up to direct marketers to make these determinations. Now that’s motivation!

Motivation to determine these additional means of communication with direct mail can help achieve a higher response rate. A higher response rate is a good motivator to gather this information. Right?

In July, Seth Godin, a well-known marketing consultant, writer and guru, pointed out in a recent post that many people who are doing marketing are doing it badly. Seth makes a good point. We read about lackluster results on a daily basis in a variety of industry publications.

There are so many different ways to measure results but apparently not many marketers are using them. Maybe a “true marketer” already has the gift of motivation?

Marketing is not a shell game

A “true marketer” always looks for answers on the effectiveness of any marketing campaign. Answers give marketers ideas and stimulate creativity to make the next campaign better.

With today’s analytics, CRM’s, social media, the intelligent bar code in direct mail and measuring opportunities in every other channel selection, there is no excuse not to analyze results. Isn’t that the real definition of a “true marketer?” Always looking for better results?
