Follow on Google News | New Book Showcases History of Saranac LakeLocal author tells the history of the area using stunning, vintage images
Saranac Lake, the first pictorial history on the area, explores the history of village beginning in 1819 when the first settlers arrived to make a living from the forests of the Adirondacks. Vintage images then show the progression of the village as it became the hub for local tourism, an area where wealthy city dwellers came to hunt, fish, boat and hike. The book also shares information and images on how Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau established the fresh-air cure for tuberculosis, and Saranac Lake became America’s “Pioneer Health Resort.” Most of the images throughout the book were culled from the collection of the Saranac Lake Free Library and demonstrate the area’s culture of excellent medical facilities, an active arts scene and a great library and educational system. These traits combined with traditional Adirondack values make Saranac Lake “the Little City of the Adirondacks.” Available at area bookstores, independent retailers, and online retailers, or through Arcadia Publishing at (888)-313-2665 or online.
