On behalf of Sterlite Copper, Mr.Vinod Wagh, and General Manager – Engineering Services distributed the educational kits to girl students of the school.
Sterlite launched the Ilam Mottukal Project in July 2012 to improve the quality of lives of the community around them. For this project, Sterlite Copper supports the education of 6132 girl children from 77 Government schools in Tuticorin this year.
“Realising that girls are marginalised in the society, we felt the need to provide girl children with a good and healthy childhood. Through this project, we seek to provide girls with the opportunity to study and grow to achieve independence in thought and action. Our project ‘Ilam Mottukal’ will help in the holistic development of these girls,” said Mr.Vinod Wagh, General Manager – Engineering Services.
Additional academic support, material support, social and moral support are the key components in the programme. Academic special classes are being conducted for 1.5 hours beyond school time which will help to bridge the learning gaps and enable children to reach their grade specific competency level in school. The classes are conducted by 183 trained tutors selected within the community with the vision that they would be the local resource to act as friends and mentors to the children.
As the first phase of the project this year, education kit comprising school bag, undergarments, shoes, socks, stationery, notebooks, umbrella, etc was handed over to 6132 girl children. Sterlite has allotted Rs 1.6 crore for this initiative.
