Bora Health began life in Australia in early 2012 and has gone from strength to strength from there. Community minded entrepreneurs Joel Groth, a native Australian, and English expat Daniel Westhead saw the need for the business community to step up to the increasing challenge facing many Western countries – that of an ageing population without the means to support themselves in their senior years.
“And it is an increasing problem.” said Joel “considering the Australian Bureau of Statistics predicts that by 2041 one in five people will be over 65 and 7% of the population will be aged over 80 it is clear to see that we need to address this, and we need to address it now. The UK is in the exact same position so when we saw how people were benefiting from our services down under, we couldn’t with good conscience not offer our services to the UK”
The idea for Bora Health came about following the challenges Joel faced when caring for his grandmother after the passing of his grandfather. “There was very little information out there, and it was very difficult to know where to turn” Joel said. “Also, grandma did not have much money so we found most of the products and services advertised were way out of budget. I thought this was a really unfair way to be treating our parents and grandparents, and something needed to be done”.
Bora Health promotes inexpensive and easy-to-use products and services to a problem that more and more British families – including Joel’s – are experiencing:
Factors such as the highly publicised Global Financial Crisis, the budget deficit and peoples pension age being pushed back have meant that every Britain has had to question how far the Government will be able to look after family or loved ones in the future.
“We used to be able to rely on the Government to look after us in our old age” said Bora Health co-Founder Daniel “But as we’ve seen happen in the US and Australia, as a greater proportion of the community reaches retirement, the increasing budget strain on the public sector purse means that the responsibility falls back on the individual and their family. The question is can everyone afford it?”
