Davidson and Garrard’s  2nd Annual “Souper Bowl”, a feast of soups BENEFITING Campus Kitchen at Washington and Lee’s Backpack Program for LEXINGTON AND Rockbridge County children

Over 18 Local Restaurants/Caterers will contribute soup this year for sampling at Evans Dining Hall, Sunday January 26th from 11am-2pm.  The “Souper Bowl” will feature live entertainment and a festive atmosphere while highlighting each partner restaurant.  Participating Restaurants include:  Red Hen, Southern Inn, Blue Sky Bakery, Healthy Foods Co-op, Salernos, Sweet Treats, Sheridan Livery, Brix°, E Café, Nikos, Bistro On Main, Kind Roots Café, Cool Spring Organics, Pronto, Cheese to You, Pure Eats and Full Circle Catering.

Suggested donation is $10 for students, $15 for adults and max. $40 per family.

Lori Frascati, Director of Client Relations at Davidson & Garrard, and one of the organizers of the event, noted, “Campus Kitchen at Washington and Lee’s Backpack Program started in 2009 as a partnership between Campus Kitchen and Natural Bridge Elementary School, and has expanded to cover all seven elementary schools in the Rockbridge area. This vital program delivers backpacks filled with non-perishable food to the schools and targets children who are eligible for free or reduced lunches.”  Jenny Davidson, another event organizer and Co-Curricular Service Coordinator at W&L, remarked, “Children are guaranteed lunch Monday through Friday and now by sending food home with them in backpacks on Friday night, CKWL ensures they have food over the weekend.  The program provides snacks for over 600 local pre-school  and elementary school students who deal with hunger on a regular basis.  Please join us in tackling childhood hunger by participating in the 2nd Annual Souper Bowl.”  W&L students are heavily involved in the program which has increased awareness of hunger issues amongst students, community members, and works to combat a much larger scale problem.

Students, who receive the backpacks, as a percentage of the student body, range from 21.6% at Harrington Waddell Elementary to 71.13 % at FW Kling.  The average of all elementary schools in the program is 49%.

The event raised thousands of dollars for the program last year, an essential part of tackling childhood hunger locally.  This year we have more participating restaurants, more entertainment and expanded seating. This year’s event promised to be an event not to miss!
