MagneTone Drums Announces World’s First Magnetic Interlocking Snare Drums

Magnetic Interlocking System (TM) with interchangeable, quick-release drum shells lets drummers change snare drum sounds almost instantaneously; multiplier effect offers an economical way to purchase more drums for less money

ATTLEBORO, Mass. - Jan. 8, 2014 - PRLog -- MagneTone Drums announces the immediate availability of a cutting-edge snare drum design that utilizes a Magnetic Interlocking System to enable endless sound possibilities for a fraction of the cost when compared to purchasing multiple snare drums.

“MagneTone snare drums are the culmination of five years of research and development into dual-shell drum design. We are very pleased to offer a completely unique snare drum system that actually saves drummers money, time, and space.  We have virtually eliminated the need for people to spend many thousands of dollars on a vast snare drum collection to achieve various sounds. We’re giving drummers the ability to change their drum sound in a matter of seconds, on the fly, with no disruption to their performance,” said Artie Eaton, President of MagneTone Drums.

MagneTone Multiplier—Positive Financial Impact

By utilizing separate drum shells that connect magnetically, the top shell can be quickly swapped, enabling drummers to mix and match top shells with bottom shells, thereby multiplying the number of drums available. Eaton explains, “The MagneTone Multiplier saves drummers money. For example, when someone purchases two complete MagneTone snare drums, they actually have four drums because each top shell can be used with each bottom shell. If the drummer purchases just one more top shell, he or she now has six drums because that top can now be used with both bottoms. If that drummer were to purchase just one more bottom, the number of drums increases from six to nine! That’s the beauty of the MagneTone Multiplier effect.”

A review in the February 2014 issue of Modern Drummer magazine states, “Aside from the sonic possibilities, there’s a financial benefit here. A single MagneTone drum will cost in the neighborhood of $700, which is similar to other professional-grade snares. If you were to purchase another drum for $700, you’d have spent around $1,400 for two sounds. If you purchase two MagneTones, you’ll essentially have four different sonic options for the same amount of money.”

Two Series for Maximum Value and Versatility

MagneTone wood drum shells1 are available in two configurations; the Concert Series and Player Series. Both series feature the exclusive Magnetic Interlocking System as well as 2.3mm triple flanged hoops, 10-lug configuration,2 hand-rubbed finishes, hand-finished bearing edges, and Evans drum heads.

Concert Series shells feature a lathe-turned segmented construction for maximum resonance. Concert Series bottom shells utilize the industry-leading Trick GS007 Throwoff and feature 20-strand German coiled steel snare wires with phosphor bronze end clips. Wood types currently available with Concert Series include Maple, Birch, African Mahogany, Bubinga, Purple Heart, and Zebra Wood.

Player Series shells feature 10-ply construction with a birch core. MagneTone ply shells are an economical alternative to the segmented design, and are custom manufactured to MagneTone’s exacting standards, ensuring consistency and quality. Player Series bottom shells utilize a chrome side-throw snare strainer and 20-strand steel snare wires. Player Series ply shells are available with maple, mahogany, and birch outer plies. Other exotic outer plies are available by special order.

Additional top shell options include brass, aluminum, and acrylic. Bottom shells are currently available in maple, birch, and African mahogany. Later in 2014, bottom shell options will include various metals and acrylic.

1 MagneTone metal and Acrylic shells are standalone top shells, not associated with a particular series.

2 Applies to 14” standard diameter shells. Smaller diameter shells may use fewer lugs.

Magnetic Interlocking System Explained

Expanding on the previous design of their Dual-Floating-Shell and Modular snare drums, which were marketed under the Organic Custom Drums brand, Eaton and Eisner designed a new system that did away with the need to adjust hardware and de-tune the drum to swap shells. The Magnetic Interlocking System utilizes rare-earth magnets that hold the top and bottom shells together with a super strong bond. With a simple twist, the top and bottom shells can be disconnected and a new, pre-tuned top shell can be quickly added.

The embedded Magnets are countersunk directly into the shell (Concert Series) or into a thick-ply reinforcement ring (Player Series, metal and acrylic shells). This enables a strong bond between the two shells, with no adverse effect on the sonic qualities. Modern Drummer magazine (February 2014 issue) stated, “We were pleased to discover that the embedded magnets didn’t hinder the sonic quality of the snare drums. Each drum configuration offered plenty of tone, crack, pop, and articulation.”

Endless Possibilities and Practical Application

MagneTone’s unique design gives drummers virtually endless sound combinations. MagneTone drum builder, Rich Eisner explains, “An obvious benefit is the ability to change the top drum shell to a different type of material –wood (whether it’s segmented or ply), metal, acrylic, etc. But what’s even more exciting, is that the MagneTone design lets drummers change the depth of the top shell, which can vastly change the characteristics of the drum. Additionally, the diameter of the top shell can be changed. The potential to pair a 12” top with a 14” bottom can offer a very unique sound option.” Nashville-based touring/session drummer Ben Jackson stated, "The MagneTone drums sound incredible. Every combination has its own unique vibe, which I think is really important. On top of that, the same engineer has recorded them a few times now and keeps requesting them.”

In a studio or live setting, the Magnetic Interlocking System allows for lightning fast shell changes, with pre-tuned top shells readily available. Keith Zebroski, drummer for the award-winning Country Music artist, Miranda Lambert said, “Aside from the sound characteristics of combining the two different shells, the ability to change the top half of the drum out in seconds if I broke a head mid show was amazing!” Nashville-based recording Engineer Jeff Braun (Jeff Braun Productions) stated, “These drums sound great under the mics, making dialing them in fast and easy. Each time the top was changed it brought a new character and vibe to the drum and every one of them recorded beautifully with very little processing."

New MagneTone Website

MagneTone Drums launched a new website – www.magnetonedrums.com - that contains product information, demonstration videos, sound samples, and a new “Build-a-Drum” feature, enabling drummers to design and purchase their own drums.
