Davis Leads Jacksonville Giants Past Blackhawks 135-106

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jan. 6, 2014 - PRLog -- First year player Brandon Davis scored 35 points to lead the Jacksonville Giants (14-0) to a 135-106 win over the Montgomery Blackhawks at the UNF Arena Saturday night.

Davis was 10 of 16 from three point range and 12 of 19 from the field. He led the team with eight rebounds.

"Brandon is a rookie from Lamar University. He is a big time shooter. He really helped us out with his hot shooting. I am very fortunate to have him on the team,” said Jacksonville head coach Kevin Waters said.

Elijah Smith added 14. Travis Johnson and Jerrod Tucker each scored 11. Maurice Mickens and Brandon Knox were perfect from the foul line each going four for four.

The Giants overcame a sluggish start and pulled away from the Blackhawks with 7:10 to play and never trailed.  Jacksonville led 28-22 after the first quarter as Kevin Thomas went three for three from beyond the outer circle.

The Giants also benefited from five points off Montgomery turnovers..

"The guys came out a little rusty. They had a little time off after those big games in Boca Raton. We had to find ourselves in a hurry. We made some adjustments and established our game plan,” Waters said.

The Giants passed the century mark for the twelfth time this season on Jeleel Nelson’s dunk with 3:36 to play in the third period for a 101-65 lead.

“It’s always been a goal of ours to put up 100 plus points and hold the opponent to 80. The guys worked very hard on the offensive end. We adjusted at the half to create better opportunities for our guys to score," Waters said.

Jacksonville built a 63-48 advantage at halftime.

The Blackhawks (9-5) were paced by Mike Harvey with 20, Dominique Hicks with 19 and Eddie Ishmer with 16 points. Montgomery's Steve Cunningham was the game's leading rebounder with 11.

The Giants host the Triad Heat (0-1) from Greensboro, N.C Friday night at the UNF Arena at 7 p.m.
