First Lady of Tattoo Art Ready to Ink Up Twin Cities

MINNEAPOLIS - Jan. 3, 2014 - PRLog -- Americans spend more than a billion of dollars each year on tattoo ink and the woman who helped propel the once underground world of body art to a cultural norm is heading to Minneapolis. Shanghai Kate, one of the most influential people in modern tattoo history is an invited guest at the Minneapolis Tattoo Arts ConventionJanuary 10 – 12, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency downtown  Minneapolis where she will be providing onsite tattoo work.

Tattoo pioneer Shanghai Kate Hellenbrand is notably the first woman of the modern era of tattooing and has the longest continuous career of any high-level female tattoo artist in the United States. She began tattooing in 1971 in NYC and has worked alongside the most prominent names in the business including the legendary Sailor Jerry Collins, Hawaii; Ed Hardy, San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles; Jack Rudy, Los Angeles.

Author, tattoo artist, lecturer, global traveler, and at age 70, Kate has no plans on slowing down. She owns and operates Shanghai Kate’s Tattoo Shop in Austin, Texas and will be traveling to Germany to set up shop there for part of the year.  Kate has worked in or managed tattoo shops in New York City; Honolulu, Hawaii; Salt Lake City, Utah; Buffalo, New York; Philadelphia, PA; and even Kodiak, Alaska. She has tattooed indigenous people in the rain forests of Panama, the Philippines, and Mexico City.

Shanghai Kate will be tattooing onsite during the Minneapolis Tattoo Arts Convention and tattoo enthusiasts are encouraged to come and meet with Shanghai Kate.  She’ll have her books, artwork, and original Sailor Jerry stencils available for sale as well.

Celebrity clients include Howard Stern and his wife, Beth; Casey Affleck, members of  Pearl Jam, David LaChapelle as well as many other actors, models, musicians; sports figures and other tattoo artists who continue to seek out Kate for her strong vivid tattoos in nearly every style: American classic, Polynesian, Tribal, Asian, Photo-realism, Fineline.

Shanghai Kate is an avid educator and regularly lectures on the importance of women in the tattoo industry through her “From Voodoo To Vogue” slide presentation that she’s presented in Art Museums (Albright Knox Museum in Buffalo, NY); Universities (Columbia University, NYC and Tompkins College in Ithaca, NY); as well as many conventions around the world.  She is the ONLY woman featured in the highly acclaimed documentary film, Tattoo Nation: The True Story of the Ink Revolution, which was released in 2013 and now available on DVD.
