promo for Space Warps and Time Tunnels, the new book by research and development engineer Marshall Barnes about Stephen Hawking, the world famous astrophysicist. The commercial will be produced and directed by Barnes who spent the first ten years or so of his adult life as an acclaimed underground rock video and special effects editor/producer/
It hasn't been determined what the entire extent of the use of the Verdrehung Fan™ will be, but it is certain that it will be used in some fashion as a special effect feature of some kind. Shooting is scheduled to begin in two weeks and should only take a half day. The entire promo is estimated to be shot and edited within two days or less. The promo will be appearing in various places online and in social media.
The book is being advertised as controversial, as Marshall is Hawking's staunchest critic, however there will be an extensive amount of physics concepts - both new and reinterpreted, so that the science fans will be heavily engaged. The book is not a Hawking biography but an analysis of his work and career to determine how much of it is accurate in view of his image as the world's latest Einstein. In that regard, the book will be as much about pop culture, media hype and branding as it is about physics, and it will draw back the curtain on the business of popularizing science to the public and how that business makes stars of scientists.
"I think when people, who are just part of the general public, get passed the first chapter, they'll realize that they really never understood Hawking in the first place - he was just an image, and that the book is going to go into a lot more. They'll learn a lot more about the nature of time and the physics of time travel than they could've from anything Hawking has written about it and they'll learn what Hawking has been saying at the same time. That's the best way to learn. They can do the comparisons and see what really works, what really makes sense - after its been analyzed."
"What I think they'll be surprised by is the flow of the plot," Marshall continued, "I basically say that Hawking is usually wrong when he talks about the nature of time and almost always wrong when he talks about time travel at even the lowest pedestrian level. Then, we cover what he's written and said and analyze it. That happens beginning in the first chapter and by the time you've read that you'll be shocked. But there's nine more chapters to go. Then, at the end of the book you see the reason from his background that verifies and validates my hypothesis in the first place - after you've seen all the hard evidence. It's like a murder mystery where the detective is trying to prove this guy guilty but has to go on more than his gut. He has to chance down all the hard evidence and he does it, but at the end, a witness come forward who saw and heard the guy doing the things that tie all the evidence together conclusively. That's what this book is like. It's almost a nonfiction science thriller, and it does have a surprise ending and it does have a shocking revelation and plenty of bad guys and intrigue, and it will cause quite a controversy because it's going to tick some people off and not all of them for the same reasons, but I'll tell you what - they can all take a long hike on a short pier, because I couldn't care less."
The book will be available in print, multi-media e-book and PDF e-book. The print version will be out first.
