Hunting Safety Should be Top Priority for Hunt Clubs

According to Outdoor Underwriters, more than 20 million people will participate in hunting sometime during the season.

Jan. 1, 2014 - PRLog -- Despite the growing number of hunters who hit the fields each year, hunting is still considered a relatively safe sport. However, just because it is relatively safe, doesn’t mean that accidents don’t happen.

Many, but not all, hunting accidents involve firearms. It’s worth noting that fatal hunting accidents occur at a rate of 80 to 90 persons per year, according to Interstate Sportsman.

In order to reduce accidents and to help keep hunting relatively safe, it is important for hunters and hunt clubs alike, to take measures to ensure that there are proper safety precautions in place.

“Safety precautions can help to greatly reduce the chance of an accident,” explains Texas Outdoor Insurance. “For hunting clubs, there is nothing more important than safety.”

Gun related accidents, while less common than many other types of injuries, are among the most devastating types of injury. Many gun injuries are self-inflicted, due to mishandling of a loaded gun. Proper safety precautions should be taken to avoid such accidents.

“Gun related accidents are among the most tragic of accidents. Loaded and mishandled guns lead to accidents that can easily be prevented with some basic gun safety courses,” explains Texas Outdoor Insurance. “Simple safety procedures can save lives.”

Another contributing factor to hunting accidents is tree stands. According to Texas Outdoor Insurance, one in three hunting accidents involves a tree stand, meaning that this is a high-risk category. Because of this, tree stand safety is an especially important part of reducing hunting accidents.

Keeping hunting a safe sport is beneficial to hunters and hunt club owners alike. Not only can accidents be devastating, they can increase your insurance rates as well.

Texas Outdoor Insurance recommends that hunt clubs take safety precautions to help prevent injuries. Hunt clubs should inspect and repair tree stands annually, and always provide safety harnesses for tree stands. Hunt clubs should also create safety policies, and make sure they purchase a liability insurance policy.

For gun safety, hunt clubs should offer basic gun safety classes, or require members to pass a hunting safety class. Hunt clubs should also instruct members to unload guns before transporting them or before climbing into tree stands to avoid accidental discharge. Hunt clubs should also inform members to always treat a gun like it is loaded, and to always be certain of their target and what is behind their target.

“The fewer accidents you or your club is involved in – the better it is for everyone,” reminds Texas Outdoor Insurance.
