Follow on Google News | Online environmental sciences courses begin Jan. 13, 2014Montana State University offers graduate-level online courses for professionals, including classes on remote sensing, holistic management, environmental biophysics and landscape ecology.
By: Montana State University Extended University Landscape and Ecosystem Ecology (LRES 571) covers the forces that shape landscape patterns over space and time as well as the methods and tools we use to analyze ecosystems. Instructor Scott Powell will explore these issues and encourage students to develop a real-world project using relevant data sets. Remote Sensing Applications in Environmental Science (LRES 573) addresses how remote sensing helps with critical interpretations of an environment. The course, taught by Scott Powell, uses hands-on exercises in basic digital image processing and analysis to teach the applications of remote sensing. Environmental Biophysics (LRES 565) covers the physical relationships between organisms, ecosystems and their environments. Students will explore contemporary ecological challenges using ecosystem models and field observations. The instructor is Paul Stoy. Holistic Thought and Management (LRES 521) uses the emerging discipline of systems thinking to explore sustainable solutions to the coupling of natural resources management with the presence and impacts of humans. Instructor Cliff Montagne will incorporate many case studies from his BioRegions work in Mongolia. The courses are appropriate for professionals working in conservation, agriculture, GIS, meteorology, forestry and other areas of natural resources management. Current students include employees of federal agencies, environmental consulting firms and non-governmental agencies as well as environmental law professionals, science teachers and others working in or interested in environmental science. Some prerequisites may apply. For more information, visit http://eu.montana.edu/ End
