CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Dec. 29, 2013 - PRLog -- Patients with Adhesive Capsulitis or Frozen Shoulder Syndrome suffer from sudden pain in the shoulders, loss of motion in the shoulder and stiffness -- all these even without injury or any possible reason for pain. Frozen Shoulder Syndrome usually just affects one arm. However, there are some cases wherein patients develope frozen shoulder in the other arm later on.

Causes of Adhesive Capsulitis

Experts still cannot find one clear cause of the Frozen Shoulder Syndrome. However, how the condition progresses has already been studied. According to studies, the condition starts with the inflammation of the joint capsule of the shoulder joint. This is where the bones of the shoulder are held together by ligaments. The inflammation of the ligaments causes pain and, over time, restricts the range of motion; hence "freezing" the shoulder.

It is believed that some factors can lead to a Frozen Shoulder Syndrome. One would be a previous shoulder injury or surgery. It has also been observed that people aged 40-70 years usually suffer from the condition. People with hyperthyroidism, diabetes or those who have gone through open heart surgery are likely to experience this condition, too.

Treatment

When a person suffers from Adhesive Capsulitis, physicians will require an x-ray and/or MRI to see factors like arthritis. If diagnosed as frozen shoulder syndrome, the doctor will most likely suggest non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), physical therapy and steroid injections. Surgery may be recommended if none of the treatments work.

However, if you do not want to take medications or go through surgery just yet, an alternative treatment would be chiropractic care. There are only a couple of chiropractors who treat Adhesive Capsulitis.

Treatment includes examination of the shoulder and spine, testing of the range of motion and spinal/shoulder adjustment. Frozen shoulder adjustment can be painful without anesthesia, but most of the time, chiropractic adjustments are not painful or are manageable. The range of motion usually improves by 50% after the first adjustment. After this, the chiropractor will provide exercises that will further promote healing.
