With the US having an ageing population, maintaining affordable independent living is an increasing problem. Bora Health launches with the aim to make independent living affordable and available for all.
In addition to a wealth of hints and tips to support Seniors staying in their homes longer, the SureSafe Personal Emergency Call System, an exclusive Bora Health medical alert for seniors, is only available here. Be sure to visit the site regularly as new independent living advice and assistive technology devices will be continually added.
Bora Health began life in Australia in 2012 and has become a global business with operations in the US, UK and Australia. Community minded entrepreneurs Joel Groth, a native Australian, English expatriate Daniel Westhead and a US investor consortium saw the need for the business community to step up to the plate and tackle the problem of an ageing population without the means to support themselves in their senior years – a problem that can be found in most western countries.
“And it is an increasing problem” said Joel “The United States is in the exact same position as the UK and Australia, where best estimates are that by 2041 one in five people will be over 65 and 7% of the population will be aged over 80. When Bora Health saw how people were benefiting from our services in other countries, they could not with good conscience not offer their services to the United States.”
Bora Health started as a personal crusade inspired by the challenges Joel faced when caring for his grandmother after the passing of his grandfather. “There was very little information out there, and it was very difficult to know where to turn” Joel said. “Also, grandma did not have much money so we found most of the products and services advertised were way out of budget. I thought this was a really unfair way to be treating our parents and grandparents, and something needed to be done”.
The premise behind Bora Health is independent living for all – the provision of inexpensive and easy-to-use products and services that help more and more American families strike the right balance between independent living and affordability. “We want independent living to be the right of everyone, not just those that can afford it” Joel added.
The Global Financial Crisis (GFC), a poorly performing economy, high unemployment and lower than usual retirement fund returns has prompted the question of how long the Government will be able to look after family or loved ones in the future?
“We used to be able to rely on the Government to look after us in our old age” said Bora Health co-Founder Daniel “But as we’ve seen happen in the UK and Australia, as a greater proportion of the community reaches retirement, the increasing budget strain on the public sector purse means that the responsibility falls back on the individual and their family. The question is can everyone afford it?”
