Press Conference, Q&A, Testimonials and More as Secretary Sebelius, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson and Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins Discussed Affordable Care, Healthcare.gov Website and Health Care Navigators in Texas

Dallas, TX [December 27, 2013] –
Martin Luther King, Jr. Family Clinic hosted a successful community outreach event in Dallas on Friday, December 20, 2013. U.S. Secretary of HHS Kathleen Sebelius met with members of the Dallas community and had rich dialogue about healthcare.gov. The MLK Jr. Family Clinic, a long-standing community health organization, is a certified healthcare navigator site and is equipped to help consumers, small businesses, and their employees as they look for health coverage options in Texas marketplace.

A major accomplishment of the meeting was to educate and garner support at the local and state levels around expanding efforts to assist residents in applying for health insurance coverage. This forum also provided an opportunity to hear positive stories from individuals who utilized the healthcare.gov website and successfully signed up for coverage for themselves and family members.

“We learned about some of the improvements of the website overhaul efforts,” stated Joyce Tapley, CEO, Martin Luther King, Jr., Family Clinic. “There was transparent discussion about a few more challenges to the overhaul that are scheduled to be resolved soon. National, regional and local efforts to assist patients with information on coverage are of critical importance to those of us who regularly serve the uninsured and underinsured.”

Several staff members at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Family Clinic are certified to provide outreach and enrollment activities. Current uninsured patients and individuals from the surrounding communities are currently scheduling appointments to receive enrollment assistance. Staff members plan to coordinate with community partners, local churches and businesses to assist in the enrollment efforts, and to continue providing eligibility assistance to those who may qualify for Medicaid and CHIP.
