GLENDALE HEIGHTS, Ill. - Dec. 27, 2013 - PRLog -- Scoring a Top Safety Pick rating from the prestigious Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is no small feat for the 2014 Chevrolet Spark. This is the first year that the Spark was tested by the IIHS, and it holds the honor of being the only minicar on the market to earn a Top Safety Pick rating. That’s something the folks at Sunrise Chevrolet, a premier Chevy dealership near Bloomingdale, IL, are especially excited about.

By virtue of their extremely short wheelbase, minicars are not often noted for being among the safest vehicles on the road. The engineers at Chevrolet were well aware of this problem and employed high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels throughout the architecture of the new Chevy Spark.

The front end was also designed to be especially strong in order to absorb and distribute the energy of a crash through the structure, bolstered by a cradle extension. The use of lightweight, high-strength steel extends from the roof bow to the underbody, and in conjunction with the passenger protection package, incorporating an array of 10 airbags, the Spark “delivers big safety in a small package."

Other safety features include a collapsible steering column, Lower Anchor and Tethers for Children (LATCH system), 3-point safety belts throughout, and a rollover sensing system.

The series of rigorous IIHS crash tests include side impact tests, moderate front overlap collision tests, and evaluations of the roof strength and dependability of head restraints. The 2014 Chevy Spark scored the highest rating of “good” in all of these tests.

The IIHS’s has also created a new small overlap test, which evaluates the effects of a collision involving the front corner of a vehicle. The Spark received a rating of “acceptable” in this new test.

The fine showing of the Chevy subcompact in the 2014 IIHS safety testing sets a new industry standard for minicars.
