Chicago Divorce Attorney Jeffery Leving Analyzes Sports Betting on Fox Sports Radio

Currently, sports betting is only legal in Nevada, Delaware, Montana and Oregon, however several states are considering allowing wagering on games in order to raise extra revenue and also to help end corruption surrounding sports gambling.

In fact, New Jersey recently passed a state law allowing sports wagering in casinos and at racetrack.  While the law was struck down as conflicting with federal law, according to ESPN.com Governor Chris Christie has vowed to take the case to the U.S. Supreme Court.  California and Iowa are also seeking to pass legislation allowing sports betting to occur.

Proponents of legalizing sports wagering cite the fact that betting on sports is a wide spread practice and argue that legalizing it would bring in significant revenue to states in dire financial need.  Statistics show that in 2012 Las Vegas booked nearly $3 billion in sports wagers and  another $500 billion nationally is wagered illegally on sporting events each year.

However, the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB and the NCAA challenged the practice, arguing that betting on games could “irreparably” harm athletic competition in the United States.

“While states such as Illinois could greatly benefit from the legalization of sports betting” notes Leving, “Great care must be taken to protect our athletes and maintain the integrity of sports.”
