Karl Van Richards is the new Music Director for Unity of Delray Beach

    Not long ago,  Unity of Delray Beach first heard the beautiful melodies played by its new music director, Karl Van Richards. Karl is a skilled performer in music, dance and theatre.  Musically he is an accomplished pianist, organist, arranger, composer, conductor and choreographer.  He enchants audiences with his fine performances, personality and joyful smile.

     As a pianist, he made his orchestral debut at age 17 playing the Grieg Piano Concerto in A minor, having won the Victoria M. Griffith Concerto competition. Since then, he has appeared as a soloist, collaborative and orchestral performances in his native Jamaica, The Bahamas, Puerto Rico, The Cayman Islands, Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.  He has played in local orchestras in Florida, including The Greater Palm Beach Philharmonia, The Coral Gables Symphony, The Boca Sinfonia and The Klezmer Company Orchestra. He has served as staff accompanist for the University of Miami Opera, The Ebony Chorale of the Palm Beaches and The Young Singers of The Palm Beaches.

     Karl has received Certificates of Distinction from the Royal Schools of Music, London, England.  He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami where he studied with Ivan Davis, and in his undergraduate years he received full music scholarships including the WTMI Radio Music Scholarship and the Provost Award for study in Salzburg, Austria. He also holds a master’s degree in Piano Performance from Lynn University in Boca Raton under the direction of Dr. Roberta Rust where at graduation he was bestowed the Most Outstanding Performer’s Award.

     He has performed on master-class recitals of notable pianist-performers including: John Perry (University of Southern California) Rebecca Penneys (Eastman School of Music) Howard Aibel (Juilliard School) Nicola Frisardi (Mozarteum) and George Kern (Mozarteum)

         As a choreographer, Karl’s works have been featured in performances at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and his choreography has been seen in a concert at the Lowe Art Museum in Coral Gables.

     Devoted to full-time ministry, he is an ordained minister in the Methodist Church in addition to his role as music director here.
