The single biggest interviewing mistake job seekers make that keeps them from getting hired

Why listening to so-called HR experts can rob you of any possibility of landing a job for which you are the best candidate!

NEW YORK - Dec. 23, 2013 - PRLog -- Most Human Resources experts advise job seekers to extensively rehearse their answers to questions they are likely to be asked during an interview. We believe this is exactly the wrong approach. Most job seekers are not actors or gifted natural performers. Their attempts to give flawless answers are likely to result in a B-movie type acting performance or worse.

There are two goals that the job seeker is trying to accomplish during the job interview. The first is to sell himself to the potential employer and the second is to form the early stages of a personal bond which will allow him to move to the top of the qualified job applicant list.  Both of these goals have to be met in order to get hired. This has to be made absolutely clear, no bond, no offer. If you don’t “hit it off” with the interviewer, you have no chance of getting the job no matter how accomplished you are.

You should never sacrifice the process of bonding with the interviewer in favor of giving a smooth interviewing performance. The first engages the emotions while the second works on the logical mind. Emotions trump logic every time. By overly focusing on rehearsing your answers you are actually hurting your chances of landing the job. You must appear sincere and genuine not only to form a bond but also so that the answers you give are believed and accepted. Appearing slick or rehearsed is not the way to do that.

When interviewing for a job opening, you are trying to sell yourself to a potential employer. You are selling and you have to use proven sales techniques to beat the other applicants. However you should never come across like a salesman. That will create resistance and hurt your credibility. You should go over your “sales” points ahead of the interview but leave some room for spontaneity and don’t overly rehearse the answers. In other words, be yourself, it works.
