Nurse Response has compiled a few helpful tips to help you achieve your 2014 health goals:

Find a Primary Care Physician (PCP)
–If you don’t see your PCP on a regular basis, now is the time to get started making your PCP part of your health regimen. Regular PCP visits can help you identify possible illnesses or diseases at an early stage so you can ward them off or reduce their impact. Also, you should always visit your PCP before starting a new fitness regimen for an overall health assessment and help determining the most appropriate type of fitness program for you.

Use the information on your insurance card – Knowing where to find the contact information for your nurse advice line can come in handy if you are ever in need of care and aren’t able to access to your PCP. If you have a question about muscle soreness or another non-emergency need related to your new workout routine, call the nurse advice line number listed on your insurance card to speak with an experienced health care professional who can assess your condition. Most nurse advice lines are open 24/7/365, so you can rest assured knowing you can always reach a caring voice with medical guidance.

Start small for success – As the saying goes, Rome wasn’t built in a day. The same applies when creating a new exercise regimen. Set  fitness goals that work for you based on your personal health outlook. If you have been sedentary for an extensive period, try walking outdoors or on a treadmill for 15 minutes a few times a week. As your endurance builds, gradually increase the duration and frequency of your workouts. Always listen to your body and don’t overdo it. Slow and consistent momentum will help you permanently master a healthy lifestyle.

Try something new –  If you are in moderate to excellent shape, add some spice to your workout by trying new exercise classes, boot camps and fitness DVDs or games. Health experts agree that adding variety to your exercise regimen helps with building endurance and targeting different muscle groups.

Small wins lead to big results – Trying to achieve a long-term health goal can seem overwhelming when you have a big goal to reach. Set weekly or monthly goals instead of looking at your health transition as one large feat. Breaking your goal into smaller chunks will give you a satisfying sense of accomplishment as you achieve smaller milestones as you progress.

There’s an app for that  –  In today’s digital age, there’s an app to assist with almost every health goal. You can find free fitness tools, food diaries, exercise trackers and exercise routines online through your smartphone or tablet.

Pick a partner – Pick an accountability partner who you can go to for encouragement and support along the way. Having a likeminded friend join you on your fitness journey makes it a little easier and fun.
