Dec. 23, 2013 - PRLog -- SURREY, B.C. - The holiday season is fast approaching, and soon yummy holiday treats will abound. But don't let those delectable delights tempt you into eating something that could harm your braces experience.

"I know it can be tempting to taste all the treats that we associate with the holidays," says Dr. Aly Kanani, an orthodontist who treats patients in Surrey. "But, some of those treats can damage your braces, if you wear standard metal braces. Don't damage your brackets or wires just to get a small taste of something you should be avoiding."

So, what foods should you stay away from? Be sure to avoid anything that is too hard or sticky. Those can include:

Candy canes - they fall into the category of being both hard and sticky. They can easily pull the wires from their positions while you're indulging.
Vegetable platters - it may sound strange hearing a medical professional telling you to avoid eating your vegetables, but when it comes to uncooked ones, it can be best to say no. Uncooked carrots, for example, are extremely hard and biting down on them can hurt your wires and brackets.
Nuts or snack mix containing nuts, hard pretzels or popcorn - for the same reasons as uncooked vegetables.
Pecan pie, peanut brittle and other sticky desserts - these can pull on wires, making them come loose.

It's important to remember to always avoid hard breads, hard cookies and anything else that could pull the wires loose from your mouth. Patients who have porcelain or clear pieces to their braces should take care to avoid foods that could stain their braces.

"You've already spent so much time having orthodontics treatment," says Dr. Kanani. "Damaging the wires and brackets can be painful, and lead to expensive repairs. To make your holiday as enjoyable as possible, it's best to just avoid anything on the no list, no matter how tempting. Even one small bite can cause damage."

But there's good news. There are plenty of foods you can eat while wearing our braces to enjoy the upcoming season. They include:

Ham and turkey
Cooked vegetables
Soft breads and donuts
Pumpkin pie and other soft pies and desserts, such as trifle.
Mashed potatoes and stuffing

When looking to indulge this holiday season, ask yourself two questions. The first is "Is this food hard or sticky?" and the second is "When I bite it, will it crunch?" If the answer to either is yes, it is best to avoid the food.

Patients who have chosen Invisalign treatment (http://www.vancouverorthodontics.com/invisalign-overiew.html) don't have to worry about the list of no foods during treatment. The aligners used to straighten teeth are removed at mealtime, so patients can indulge in all of their favorites this holiday season.
