"Many adults only visit their aging parents once a year which makes it essential to assess their current condition and spend a few minutes focused on the possible outcomes of living a long life," says Jesse Slome, director of the American Association for Long Term Care Insurance. The long term care insurance expert recommends doing a quick home safety assessment. "As you walk around look for potential hazards that can result in a fall," Slome advises. "Loose area rugs, extension cords or cable TV wires that are not secured safely to a wall. " Clutter is a common hazard Slome points out that can be easily addressed. Be sure to ask if the parents ever purchased long-term care insurance. "You'd be amazed how many calls we get a year from adult children who discover a policy after the parent passed away or believe their parent has a coverage but lack any vital information," The Association director notes an increase in the number of post-holiday calls from adult children seeking long term care insurance for an elderly parent.
