HIGH PEAK, U.K. - Dec. 20, 2013 - PRLog -- Andrew Pimblett, managing director of Street Crane Company and Gustavo Delgado Pilares, CEO of Peru’s largest crane maker, Movitecnica, have good cause for celebration. Following the signing of a trading partnership agreement, both companies are poised to take a much bigger share of the fast growing market for industrial cranes and hoists in Peru.

Movitecnica is Peru’s largest and most rapidly expanding industrial crane supplier. Under the technical partnership, Street, the UK’s largest factory crane manufacturer, will supply their UK built industrial hoists and crane components to meet the needs of Peru’s expanding industries. Street Crane (http://www.streetcrane.co.uk) will be supplying from the UK their series built ZX hoists to meet lifting needs up to 50 tonnes and custom built VX heavy duty hoists, for handling needs up to 200 tonnes.

Andrew explained, “With a population of 30 million people, a young age profile and enormous mineral wealth, Peru is in the premier league of high growth nations. Movitecnica is a company that has positioned itself to service the core industries such as mining and the developing industrial infrastructure with both cranes and heavy duty mineral conveyors. The total industrial crane market in Peru has grown from $8 million in 2009 to over $25 million in 2012, with still greater potential.

Street hoists and crane kits have established a reputation for high performance and reliability in the aggressive and extreme conditions of the mining industry. The company has been particularly successful in Australia, Canada and South Africa where mining and mineral processing forms a significant part of the industrial sector and this experience is reflected in their hoist designs.

“Typically, mining and their support facilities are in remote places where access is difficult so extreme reliability and ease of servicing are crucial factors to keep operations running. Above all, the mines mentality requires that if something does require attention engineers on site must have the ability to fix it themselves,” Andrew observed.

Two significant design features have driven the remarkable success of the Street ZX hoist in mines and similar applications worldwide. The first of these is the ‘aggressive environment rope guide’ which Street originally developed as an option for dusty environments and which was so successful it was adopted as standard on all their hoists. All single rope hoists need a rope guide. Standard solutions, offered by other volume hoist makers, are susceptible to damage when dust clogs up the sliding mechanism or when the rope becomes slack. When this happens the rope pushes through the guide and consequently the guide then crashes into the excess rope build-up causing a very expensive repair.

The rope guide operates with a sliding mechanism. On Street hoists this is a phosphor bronze casting with a point contact but large amount of clearance. The slider works perfectly in heavy dust including magnetic dust or even when coated in cement. On Street hoists the rope guide itself is a double band, in which the inner band clamps the rope to the hoist drum. The rope cannot push through the guide, even if the operator ‘slack ropes’ due to lifts from multiple platform levels. The outer band always runs on the inner, to guide the rope into the drum scroll.

Hoists from Street Crane have an open plan design; this makes all components easily accessible for servicing and allows components to be removed without disassembling the hoist or lowering it to ground level. Unique details such as the hoist hand brake release and provision of an inspection cover on the gear box make a vital difference to the time taken for basic servicing and inspection.

A standard switchgear option, in place of control electronics and ‘black box’ technologies, also enables speedy service of Street hoists by any qualified electrician on-site. This avoids incurring a delay, and possibly lost production, for specialised technicians to travel from the nearest service centre which may be 1000 kilometres away or in some cases overseas. Movitecnica believe that lifetime cost of ownership and minimum downtime are the decision drivers for crane selection in mines.

Another major safety and serviceability feature, unique in the standard wire rope hoist market, is Street’s hoist brakes act on a hoist gearbox shaft not an extended motor shaft. With the Street design, the hoist brake holds the load even if the hoist motor is removed or if the hoist motor coupling, connection or motor shaft were to fail. This design also gives lower operating temperatures in the hoist motor because the heat generated by the hoist brake does not soak into the hoist motor. Most importantly, the hoist brake is much more accessible.

Finally, the Street ZX Hoist design has gearing fully enclosed in an oil filled gearbox on both hoist and travel motions, whereas other leading brands have external gears on hoist and travel mechanisms which are not suited to dusty or polluted environments.

Movitecnica engineers will be visiting the Street Crane factory in Derbyshire in coming weeks for familiarisation with the equipment. Company engineers will also be regularly visiting Lima to give on-going support.
