Interactive Corrosion Exhibit Wins Training Award

Exhibit Encourages Youth to Solve Puzzles on Infrastructure Preservation

WASHINGTON - Dec. 19, 2013 - PRLog -- The Department of Defense (DoD) Corrosion Policy and Oversight Office has announced that its community of experts and three industry partners have been recognized for their outstanding achievement in the team creation and development of Corrosion: The Silent Menace, an interactive youth exhibit on view from 2013-14 at the Orlando Science Center in Orlando, Florida.

The National Training and Simulation Association (NTSA) presented a team award for training to the DoD Corrosion Office, The University of Akron, the Orlando Science Center, and Bruno White Entertainment during the 2013 NTSA Modeling and Simulation Awards ceremony, held on December 4 at the Interactive/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference in Orlando, Florida.

“The Corrosion Office is pleased to recognize the outstanding efforts of all partners who created Corrosion: The Silent Menace, a novel youth exhibit that has captivated visitors through its ability to inspire the next generation of infrastructure preservationists,” said Daniel J. Dunmire, director of the DoD Corrosion Office.

Reinforcing science, technology, math, and engineering (STEM) skills at the middle school and high school level using 3-D mapping technology, Corrosion: The Silent Menace spotlights the natural phenomena that lead to corrosion and material degradation. Visitors can choose from a menu of virtual experiences that graphically depict the science of corrosion, while also performing interactive experiments that show how engineers preserve drinking waterways, bridge and highway systems, and vital forms of public and private transportation.

“The causes of corrosion on our bridges, highways and pipelines are rooted in complex scientific processes, and this corrosion science exhibit unlocks the secret of those processes and how they can be mitigated,” Dunmire said.

Besides the principal installation developers, Dunmire credited several DoD partners for their contribution to the exhibit, including Battelle Memorial Institute; CorrDefense.org; MVE Systems, Inc.; NASA; Reading Rainbow; NACE International; NACE International Foundation; SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings; Ninjaneer Studios; and Echo Artz.
