Michael Hansen, an Optometrist in Torrance, Explains How Diabetes Can Affect Eye Health

Diabetes can affect many parts of the body, including the eyes. In a recent blog post Michael Hansen, a Torrance optometrist, goes into detail about how to prevent eye damage from diabetes and what to expect at diagnosis.

TORRANCE, Calif. - Dec. 18, 2013 - PRLog -- TORRANCE, CA – December 6, 2013 – Many people are aware that diabetes can be detrimental to a person’s health, but with proper treatment this damage can be prevented.  The same goes for eye health.  Michael Hansen of Advanced Eyecare Center states, “Diabetes can affect your pancreas, liver, kidneys and even your eyes. In the past, diabetes was a major cause of blindness. Today, if you take the necessary precautions, it would be very unlikely to suffer from blindness from diabetes.”

Hansen, in his latest blog post, explains to readers that when visiting your eye care specialist, diabetes should be taken into consideration.  He says, “Any optometrist or ophthalmologist should give his recommendations with your diabetes condition in mind. An eye specialist should look through your medical history not only of your visual heath, but your total physical health. If you suffer from diabetes, he should ask you questions about managing your condition like what medications you are taking, your latest blood sugar reading, and how long you've had diabetes.”  When someone answers these important questions, it gives the specialist an idea of what they may need in terms of eye care treatment.

Michael Hansen, a successful optometrist in Torrance (http://advancedeyecarecenter.net/south-bay-area/torrance/optometrist/  ), continues by saying, “When you are first diagnosed with diabetes, you will be given the standard eye refraction visual test such as the Snellen chart. Your eye specialist will also be checking your eyes for clouding, swelling, and bleeding.”  If there is any sign of unusual symptoms further examination may be necessary.

Dr. Hansen states, “Of course it is necessary to eye health for diabetes patients to properly manage their condition. A balanced diet, regular exercise, regular administration of diabetes medication and monitoring of blood sugar levels are very important.”  He also mentions that the treatment of your condition may be a collaboration between your diabetes specialist, retinal specialist and your optometrist.

In conclusion, Hansen explains, “The key to preventing blindness is to have regular check-ups.”  To read the full version of this Torrance optometrist’s informative blog post click the link here:
