By: Simi Valley Family YMCA The eight-week program encourages participants to make healthy life changes, in part, through weekly confidential weigh-ins every Friday. Participants will also receive nutrition and exercise materials and can attend talks from prominent health professionals. The program also includes a six-week “Y’s Way to Fitness” class on Saturday mornings. More than 550 Simi Valley residents took part in last year’s Activate Simi Valley. “Activate Simi Valley is an opportunity for all of us to commit ourselves to a healthier and more active 2014,” says Dan Jaeger, Simi Y executive director. With a password, participants will be able to track their individual progress at activatesimivalley.org. Groups and businesses are encouraged to sign up. Confidential individual results are automatically calculated as part of the total group's weight loss. Last year, the Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce, the City of Simi Valley, Simi Valley Unified School District, Waste Management and Simi Valley Adventist Hospital signed up. ”I would highly recommend Activate Simi,” says Julie Freeto, a Simi Valley Chamber member. Freeto and more than 10 other chamber members took part in Activate Simi last year. Freeto lost 35 pounds as a result of the program. “There were so many free exercise and information classes with experts who talked on health issues. These, along with having the accountability with the weigh-in every week provided great stepping stones to changing my lifestyle.” Activate Simi Valley runs from January 16 through March 1. To register prior to the January 16 kick-off, go to www.activatesimivalley.org. For more information, call the Y at 805-583-5338. End
