Women’s Foundation Awards Over $1 Million to DC-Area Nonprofits

Groundbreaking New Investments Aimed at Middle School Girls, Their Mothers

WASHINGTON - Dec. 18, 2013 - PRLog -- Washington Area Women’s Foundation today announced grants totaling $1,015,000 to 27 nonprofits whose programs are improving the economic security of low-income women and girls in the Washington metro area. The grants will touch the lives of nearly 6,000 women and girls, and will enable women to increase their collective incomes and assets by approximately $5 million in 2014.

Three of the grant recipients are receiving new awards for planning work to develop two-generation programs that work simultaneously with middle school-aged girls and their mothers. There are currently no programs of this kind in our community.

“We know that adolescence is an important opportunity to build foundational skills, encourage positive choices and reinforce girls’ health and well-being so that they can attain economic security into adulthood,” said Nicky Goren, president of The Women’s Foundation. “We’ve also found promising research that two-generation programs can help break persistent cycles of intergenerational poverty. With these new investments, our goal is to spark innovative and collaborative strategies that move families out of poverty and onto pathways to prosperity.”

Washington Area Women’s Foundation is the only donor-supported, public foundation solely focused on improving the economic security of women and girls. The foundation accomplishes this by focusing its cutting-edge grantmaking, research and advocacy on the following issue areas: jobs with benefits, career pathways and family-sustaining wages; financial education and asset building; and access to high-quality early care and education.
