TRADI – MODERNE: hob'art Gallery

HOBOKEN, N.J. - Dec. 17, 2013 - PRLog -- Local artists Geraldine Gaines, Ibou Ndoye, and Liz Cohen art will be on display in the exhibition, Tradi-Moderne, at hob’art cooperative gallery, The Monroe Center for the Arts, #E208, 720 Monroe Street, Hoboken, NJ.  The show runs from Dec. 4 through Dec. 28, 2013. The opening reception is Dec. 7, 2013 from 6-8 pm and there will be a gallery talk on Dec. 15, 2013 from 3:30-4:30 pm. The public is welcome.

All three artists are influenced by the traditional arts of the indigenous peoples of the world. While they take their inspiration from these folk artists, they give their own modern interpretation to the orthodox. Gaines does this through her exquisitely carved and painted wooden doors. She will also be displaying beautifully made prints on canvas, which have been made from complex designs that she carves in wood. These major pieces have been inspired by her love for African art.  Ndoye explores and reinterprets the technique of reverse glass painting, a tradition of his home country Senegal. He also creates intricate works on paper, paintings on carpet and fabulous sculpture from found objects. He is often inspired by his observations of the behaviors of people in the street.  Cohen’s painting and sculpture are heavily influenced by the aboriginal culture of Australia. Her travels through Asia, Africa and Central and South America inform her aesthetic as well. Her pieces will focus on the “doll” creatures that she has been making  and exhibiting for the last ten years.
