Invites Public to Enjoy Energetic and Interactive FIRST NIGHT® CELEBRATION On New Year's Eve, December 31 (Delray Beach, FL – December 16, 2013) Stephanie Immelman, Executive Director of the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative (DBMC), today declared, “When it comes to celebrating New Year’s Eve, there’s no place in South Florida that compares to Delray Beach.” "With its outstanding restaurants and shops, the city’s downtown is always a popular spot for visitors and residents alike. But on New Year’s Eve the area will host Delray Beach’s First Night® 2014 and be transformed into a unique playground with something for just about everyone,” she added. A tradition in Delray Beach, the family friendly First Night celebration is going to be a little different this year, with a mix of old favorite activities – like the People’s Procession, the ping pong ball drop to ring in the New Year, and the bubble-wrap stomp – as well as a fresh assortment of fun things to do. "There's going to be a whole new feel to our New Year’s Eve celebration, “ said Jarrod White, special events manager for the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative, which produces First Night for the city. “There’s going to be more interaction, a higher energy level and an even greater element of excitement for everyone.” Complete with music, dancing and activities for the whole family, First Night is the perfect way to spend New Year’s Eve. As always, the First Night celebration will include face painting, rides and an obstacle course for young visitors. There will also be an arts and crafts “Creation Station” for them as well as the opportunity to make the perfect “celebration crown” for the evening. Delray's Famous 100-foot Christmas tree will still be open to visitors who can also go ice skating – Florida style – or ride on the vintage carousel. Many of the newer activities are designed to keep participants on the move - literally. Visitors, for example, will have an opportunity to take part in Life-Size Bowling, in which a person is fit inside a giant caged bowling ball and rolled toward oversized bowling pins. That activity will take place at the intersection of Northeast Fourth Avenue and Atlantic Avenue. Also new this year is sumo wresting, where visitors will be placed inside inflatable suits before going to the mat with one another. In fact, your First Night button will enable you to participate in over 30 activities. In addition to the outstanding activities, the First Night celebration will also be an evening filled with music. "This year we’re going to bring back some of the most popular entertainers from our On the Ave events,” White said. Among those returning will be Ghaleb, whose unique style of Spanish guitar music, accompanied by a violin, drew large crowds during the Delray Marketing Cooperative’ For the kids, there’s a grand finale celebration at the Delray Beach Tennis Center, complete with a ping-pong ball launch and fireworks at 9 p.m. A second grand finale with fireworks for adults takes place at midnight to help ring in 2014. "First Night is just one more way to highlight all that Delray Beach has to offer,” said Immelman. “Our hope is that First Night visitors will come back throughout the entire year to enjoy our city – The Most Fun Small Town in America.” First Night buttons, required in order to take part in activities, can be purchased for $10 in advance and $15 on the night of the event. Buttons go on sale at the Tree lighting on December 5th and can also be purchased at City Hall, the Chamber of Commerce, the Delray News Stand, the Crest Theatre Box Office, the Delray Beach Public Library and at the Famous 100 Ft Christmas Tree.
