Dec. 16, 2013 - PRLog -- Bakersfield, CA--  Dignity Health and the American Heart Association (AHA) will organize free grocery store tours on December 17 to equip the community with tools and resources to lead heart-healthy lives. The tours will provide participants valuable information about proper nutrition, simple healthy shopping techniques, and receive free reusable shopping bags with information about health screenings.

The grocery store tours are free and open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on December 17, 2013, at the Vallarta supermarket, 1515 Panama Lane, Bakersfield CA 93307. The goal of the tours, hosted by the American Heart Association, is to educate Latinos about making healthy food choices to reduce their risks for cardiovascular disease, the No. 1 killer in the community.

Nutrition experts of Dignity Health and volunteers of the American Heart Association will lead the grocery store tours. The tours will offer tips on healthy grocery shopping and food label reading. Participants will also have the opportunity to discuss proper nutrition with a bilingual nutrition expert.

“We are proud to support the American Heart Association’s mission of building healthier lives free from cardiovascular disease and stroke,” said Robin Mangarin-Scott, Director of Strategic Marketing at Dignity Health. “Together, I know that we can make a difference in our community.”

“Heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases remain the leading causes of death among Latinos” said Robin Mangarin-Scott of Dignity Health. “This is why I feel these grocery tours are very much needed in our communities.”

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health in 2011, Hispanic Americans were 1.2 times as likely to be obese than Non-Hispanic Whites and are 1.7 times more likely than non-Hispanic white adults to have been diagnosed with diabetes by a physician.
