Rough Seas Ahead for SeaWorld, says PR Expert

Dec. 16, 2013 - PRLog -- MIAMI (Dec. 16, 2013) –The other day, classic rock band REO Speedwagon joined a growing list of musical acts that pulled-out of an upcoming concert series at SeaWorld in Orlando. The acts are protesting the theme park’s treatment of its killer whales as portrayed in the CNN documentary Blackfish, which first aired on CNN in October. The documentary focuses on the captivity of Tilikum, a killer whale who was involved in the deaths of three individuals, and raises questions about the safety and humaneness of keeping killer whales in captivity.

SeaWorld chose not to participate in the production of the documentary and has claimed that the film was inaccurate and misleading. Choosing to not participate in the documentary is understandable claims public relations consultant John P. David, but the fact that SeaWorld has done little to increase their credibility and reputation after the release of the documentary is not a smart move.

His blog post on the topic (miamiprblog.com), explains the major issues that plague theme parks with killer whales and offers suggestions for how SeaWorld and other theme parks can weather the storm Blackfish has started.

“Perhaps the most viable solution will be to announce a plan to phase-out killer whale shows at SeaWorld. It may take a decade or more, but it would give SeaWorld a chance to develop new revenue streams and rebuild its shrinking credibility,” said David in his blog. David, president of David PR Group, has counseled executives on public relations and crisis communications for more than 20 years.

“No matter what, there are rough seas ahead for SeaWorld,” said David.
