Toot Compare Offers Advice for Motorists to Prepare Their Car for Winter

Motoring service comparison site Toot Compare has offered helpful tips and essential items to help motorists prepare their cars for the winter season ahead.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Dec. 13, 2013 - It is essential that drivers are as prepared as they can be for the winter months. The last few winter seasons have brought heavy snowfalls, patches of ice, and temperatures have regularly dropped below -10 degrees.

As a starting point, here is a breakdown of everything you should check on your car to ensure that it is fully prepared for the winter season.

·         Antifreeze
Check the coolant levels frequently, and if necessary, top up with the correct type of antifreeze for your engine. Your local garage can check the concentration of your antifreeze to ensure it provides adequate cold temperature protection.

·         Battery
Problems with the car battery are the most common cause of breakdowns during winter. If your battery is over five years old, it may struggle to cope with the bitter temperatures. Have your battery checked out as soon as possible, and replace it if necessary.

·         Fuel
Do not let your fuel levels drop below a quarter of a tank, in case of unexpected delays.

·         Lights
Check that all of your lights are working correctly on a regular basis, and keep them clean to ensure that you can see, and be seen. Always carry spare bulbs in case one of them fails.

·         Tyres
You are legally required to have a minimum of 3mm tread on your tyres for the winter season. For improved safety, you may want to consider purchasing specialist winter tyres.

·         Windscreen
Keep your windscreen clean, inside and out; this will help to reduce dazzle from the low winter sun. It is also a good time to consider replacing worn out wiper blades.

·         Screen Wash
In winter, use a good quality screen wash, with a mix of about 50 per cent, as this will reduce the chance of it freezing when the temperature drops.

·         Locks and Door Seals

Additionally, these are the most essential items that every motorist must have in their car to help them cope with the cold winter months:

·         Blankets and sleeping bags

·         Shovel

·         Salt, sand, cat litter – to help clear snow and ice

·         Reflective jacket

·         Torch and batteries

·         Windscreen scrapers and de-icer

·         Tow rope – if you live in a remote area, also purchase snow chains

·         Battery jump leads

·         Bottled water and snacks

·         Extra screen wash

·         Warning triangle

If it has been a while since your car was last serviced, consider booking it in before the cold weather hits. Some garages offer a winter car service, performing a thorough inspection of your vehicle and highlighting any areas that will need improving or monitoring to ensure that your car is well prepared to deal with extreme conditions.http://www.tootcompare.com/
