CarbonCare® Label encourages carbon reduction in Hong Kong enterprises

By: Carbon Care Asia

NORTH POINT, Hong Kong - Dec. 13, 2013 - PRLog -- According to the latest report by the Hong Kong Observatory, there is a high risk that the average temperature in Hong Kong can be sharply increased by 6 degree Celsius in the period of 2091 to 2100, compared with the period of 1986 to 2005. Therefore, carbon reduction is largely essential.

Being aware of the impacts brought to the community, as well as the business sector, far more enterprises have put forward carbon reduction policies.

To recognize the companies with outstanding performance in carbon accounting and reduction, Carbon Care Asia has held ceremony recently. A total 14 enterprises and organizations from different sectors have received the CarbonCare® Label from the hands of Mr. Vincent Piket, who is the Head of European Union Office in Hong Kong & Macau.

MRC Technology International Limited (MRC) is one of the awardees. It has successfully reduced the carbon emission by 5% (Level 1) in first year.

When talking about the efforts in minimizing carbon reduction, Dr. Eddie Hwang, the Managing Director of MRC, has introduced some of the eco-friendly company policies.

‘With the Mission to Reduce Carbon, we carry out thorough measures to reduce carbon. Apart from providing low-carbon technology products, a green working environment is also emphasized. For example, we put labels to remind our staffs to turn off the lights when they leave and record the number of paper being printed.’

Yet, there is still a large room for improvements by companies in terms of carbon disclosure.

Delivered by the CEO of Carbon Care Asia, Ir Albert Lai, the performance report showed that only the listed companies within the Hang Seng Composite Index (HSCI) that are required to comply or explain the status for company reports regarding the new listing guidelines on ‘Environmental, Social and Governance Reporting’ starting from 2015, have implemented the carbon disclosure.

Besides, less than 1 % of total companies have disclosed the emission by sources and set absolute or relevant targets for carbon emission.’ It implies the government needs to give more assistance to small to large companies for motivating them to provide more detailed carbon report.

‘Everyone bears the responsibility for the climate change.’, stressed by Mr Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, the CEO of the Hong Kong Jockey Club when he gave the opening speech in the ceremony. Hence, it is an obligation for every citizen to save the beautiful planet together.

The effort of enterprises is significant in the road of fighting against global warming. ‘It would be a pleasure for companies to confer the issues on how to make the world better, as well as making Hong Kong a contributing city in the world.’, said Chong Chan Yau, the chairman of Carbon Care Asia.
